A country is as sick as its secret prisions

It is impossible to have it both ways. One cannot simultaneously advance freedom while defiling freedom's soul. Irony abounds. Prisons formerly used by the USSR to house and "rehabilitate" political enemies of the state have allegedly been converted to secret prisons housing the political enemies of The Shining City On A Hill . Their grey walls are already soaked in human misery. It is there that our countrymen might ask questions in ways we know to be wrong. The answers sluiced through the cloth of torture are far less important than what we become by accepting ourselves and our country as institutional torturers. Through its use and acceptance we can only become more steadfastly ignorant and cruel. It is possible for the tortured to emerge spiritually intact. It is not possible for the torturer to enjoy that outcome. Think about basic values.

Yes, let's try to morally rise above an enemy that routinely beheads it's enemies. I'm sure if we just ask nicely they'll tell us everything.

So is the US so tight with Putin that we have free run of Russia's prisons...? Or was it that the US went off with no international support into Iraq...

I'm confused, the DNC talking points are contradicting again. Could someone post this to Kos so we can get the offical version?

so you guys are for the torture of American soldiers then -- i'm sure they appreciate you stabbing them in the back.

Censored, (*yawn*), your DNC/Kos comments are incredibly childish. But then, that's to be expected when you have nothing of substance to say.

party opposite - just to reiterate my last point - you'd have us sink to the level of the enemy?

you are aware that the military has found torture leads to bad intelligence, right? that's why it's, you know, against the rules.

i'll be damned to see anyone try to twist torture into an American value. Not My America. No fucking way.

We oughtn't forget also, that the beheadings only started happening AFTER Abu Graib.

It's funny, but has anybody noticed that every time there's been a chance to salvage something out of this mess, some new revelation of right wing stupidity comes to light?

I mean all this revenge fantasy stuff appeals to you ruff&tuff wingnuts, but really, what does that that accomplish out in the world?

Torture is against the rules because it's sick and we shouldn't fall to that level.

America is better than that.

Or should be, anyway. Apparently Dick Cheney disagrees.

BTW, Andy, beheading has been a favorite tactic of mujahideen for a long time.

Hey Chuck, better call the Pentagon, they're awaiting your expert analysis. Don't like the comments?

You could just delete em. And if you haven't noticed, its NOT your America. Its "ours," and that means its not up to just you.

Don't pretend to know about the military, its silly of you.

Kind of like Andy's fantasy about Islamofacists not killing until Abu Graib. WTF was that?

And finally, Luke - when you wrote "mujahideen" you meant terrorist assholes.

Mujahideen are something else.

Ahh, another series of non-responses and hot air, as I'd expect. Good luck with your immoral pro-torture stance. And as you'll recall, one of the conditions of deleting comments is not signing your posts.

Don't you love how, when someone puts out an opinion that differs from Censored's, he automatically assumes you either a) don't know what you are talking about, or b) will avoid directly replying to and/or twisting your statements?
You are right, Censored, it is "ours" which means that it isn't up to just you, either. The military HAS found torture to lead to bad intel, which is why it IS against the rules(confirmed by people currently in the military, from multiple branches), and you have no idea what Luke meant, just what you wanted him to mean.

I stand corrected.

I don't know what Luke meant.

He may very well suspect we're fighting Pushtun Communists from Afghanistan in Iraq.

I also apologize for not signing my post.

Finally Housewife - let me respond directly to you. First, no matter how good you second hand info is, its second hand info. I do question your knowledge of the military. I know some guys isn't a credential.

Censored can bite me.

First, the mujahedeen is what they call themselves.

Second, many of our troops call them the "muj". That's short for mujahedeen.

Third, many of the mujahedeen who fought the Soviets in Afganistan are now fighting us.

Finally, cutting off people's heads has been a favorite tactic of theirs since fighting the Soviets, if not before.

I used that term deliberately because decapitation is not exclusive to terrorists fighting against us.

That makes perfect sense Luke. Thanks for clearing it up.

I suppose it also makes them French revolutionaries, as I recall beheading was pretty popular there too. Many of our troops hate the French...

You have an excellent skill in making points that defy all known knowledge and logic. For that, I salute you. (Here's another piece of evidence for your theory -- Ronald Reagan called both the revolutionaries and the muj "freedom fighters").

"Censored's" tactics always involve getting off the subject of debate.

To bring us back around: Torture is still wrong. America is not in favor of torture. Instead of trying to make my country a bastion of totalitarian, anti-human rights behavior, why don't you start your own?

The thing is...we were never 'them'. We could say American's don't torture...we have a constitution to protect our rights. And we have laws and treaties that regulate how we treat others....all that has changed. We have no defense...we have become 'them'. http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/110305B.shtml

(sigh)

Luke,

I used the exact same arguement you did. How is it that when I do it, the exact same arguement lacks logic but yours retains validity?

Here's one for you - how come there's not "Plamesq" outcry of compromised info leaked with a political agenda on this one?

What's the difference? Be honest with yourself.
