US envoy calls Iraq "Pandora's Box"

US envoy to Iraq: 'We have opened the Pandora's box'

The US ambassador to Baghdad conceded yesterday that the Iraq invasion had opened a Pandora's box of sectarian conflicts which could lead to a regional war and the rise of religious extremists who "would make Taliban Afghanistan look like child's play".

I applaud Zalmay Khalilzad for speaking frankly. It is disgraceful that plain spoken words stand in stark relief against the continuing wall of spin foisted on us by Cheney, Rumsfeld and co.

I'm going to disagree with the idea that box was containing all these problems. Also that civil war is imminent.

If the box didn't contain these problems, or the potential for these problems, why were so many voices predicting them before we went in?

If they didn't exist, why do they now?

Re. civil war: nobody knows if it is imminent or not. But we cannot ignore the possiblility. It's stupid to pretend it doesn't exist and that "victory" is even close to measurable under these circumstances.

Chris,

These were the same voices that were saying it would cost 100,000 American lives to liberate Iraq. That Afghanistan was absolutely impervious to outside involvement as evidenced by the USSR's failure. So excuse my skepticism.

Kurdish tensions have been high in Turkey, Northern Iraq and parts of Iran since the 40's. How is that "contained?" Iran and Iraq had an 8 year war with Sunni/Shia underpinnings. Is that your idea of "in the box?"

I'm not denying these issues exist. I'm questioning the perspective that they were contained.

How 'bout that civil war...?? Still waiting.

Do you ever read the news or watch TV? The civil war is already happening. It is low level, but it is happening.

uh...yes. It's Zalmay Khalilzad's opinion too. That's the point of the post.

Luke - the MSM is touting a eruption into full blown civil war. Not continuing low level violence.

That simply has not materialized. There was a moment of tension when the golden shine was bombed, but its kind past.

Here's an interesting perspective of what much of that fighting really is. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060309/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_fighting_al_zarqawi
I can't accuse you guys of inconsistancy. If international monitoring of terrorist communications is "domestic wiretapping" then it only follows that the fights between locals and foreign terrorists is "civil war."

You guys need to get with the program. Civil war was yesterdays meme. Now its "plantation." No, wait that was last week... Oh, I know, its "police state."
