If it keeps on raining...

...the levee's going to break:

Washington knew that this day could come at any time, and it knew the things that needed to be done to protect the citizens of New Orleans. But in the tradition of the riverboat gambler, the Bush administration decided to roll the dice on its fool's errand in Iraq, and on a tax cut that mainly benefitted the rich.

And now Bush has lost that gamble, big time. We hope that Congress will investigate what went wrong here.

The president told us that we needed to fight in Iraq to save lives here at home, and yet -- after moving billions of domestic dollars to the Persian Gulf -- there are bodies floating through the streets of Louisiana. What does George W. Bush have to say for himself now?

A little food for thought, In a perfect world where every project in the country got all the funding they needed. From what I have read these projects woundn't have been completed and some not even started on 8/28/05. Hell, It states right in the story that it's going to take 4 years just for the study to be done for further projects. To insinuate that had bush gave all the money New orleans had requested last year this woudn't have happened is irresponsible and just plain biased.

People coming from Minnesota Democrats "Exposed" should know that we already posted about helping Katerina victims.

See: Help New Orleans.

Just a couple of quick questions for you, if you can stop hitting your pipe long enough?

1) Why is it the NATIONAL governments responsibility to protect New Orleans? Why couldn’t Louisiana do it themselves?
2) People of Louisiana were warned for DAYS prior to the storm to get out…why is it Bush’s fault that they didn’t leave?

I just cannot BELIEVE how many pathetic people are using this storm to try to further their political agenda.

Grow up!

Did you say this on 9/11, sicko?

"People of Louisiana were warned for DAYS prior to the storm to get out…why is it Bush’s fault that they didn’t leave?"

Notice something about the people who stayed? They're mostly poor. They didn't have enough MONEY to leave. This was a cars-only evacuation. If you had no car, no money for gas, or no money for a hotel, you were screwed.

JDS lays down the "your stupid card" That a boy!!! So you couldn't understand the post because I used a incorrect word in my sentence? or is it that i'm so intellectually below you that I couldn't possibly understand your stance on this subject? I guess I missed your opinion in your post.

Luke, I agree that it appears that the people who stayed did so by choice, Or didn't have any other options. I think that question needs to be asked of the local authorities.

It may or may not have been the Federal Gov't's job to pre-emptively save New Orleans. We can argue about that later. (Hint: Its not like it sunk below sea level after Bush was elected...)

What's clear is that there is alot of work to be done, and some tough decisions ahead.

This sort of baiting isn't helpful or productive.

Be careful what you ask for... New Orleans has a long history of corruption. The Dems won't want to go there.

President Bush didn't send the hurricane, nor did God. With a few unfortunate exceptions, I think we can agree on that.

Donating to hurricane relief should be our top priority now, no question.

But we also must begin asking, "Why?" It's human nature. It happened with 9/11. Why did this happen? Could it have been prevented? There were warnings from FEMA and the Army Corps, but Iraq and Homeland Security took money that would have gone to a lot of different places. Were those wise decisions? What are our priorities, and what are the costs (human and financial)?

Tough questions that will have to be answered sooner or later.

Yes Chuck those questions need to be asked. I want to tell you what I just watched on ABC news. They had one of the corps of egineers on and he stated that "even had we recieved all funds requested for the last 2 years we woundn't have been prepared for this". But yes, we need to decide if this is important. I would imagine the answer will be yes now. After watching the news tonight i would ask the question to the leaders of new Orleans, where is your emergency plan? You can't tell me you didn't have a worse case scenario plan in place for god sake. Where is the water, food, and medicine you should have had to take care of your people? Your the only city in America built below sea level AT THE SEA.

Yes.

I am concerned about the lack of funding for the levee projects, but as has been mentioned elsewhere hindsight is 20/20.

I am more concerned that 4 years after 9/11, this city and the federal government did NOT have their act together. There was OBVIOUSLY no plan for dealing with evacuating the city, supporting the refuegees, and rescuing the survivors. Who is responsible for this? Why do they still have a job?

I am also very disappointed (this is the right word for it. I am disappointed.) with Bush's delayed and tone-deaf response to the disaster. He couldn't have known it would happen, but when it did, he should've been on the job that instant, coordinating the response at the highest level.

Instead, he was doing photo ops and his Sec. of State was SHOE SHOPPING.

I've also seen pics of Bush playing giutar and eating cake. Yeah, not the best time to have a party.

Our stepmom (who lives/lived in Bay St. Louis) says they were really unprepared for this in New Orleans. Why weren't they getting all the city busses together to bus people out? Why did all the pumps fail? I've read they had disaster contingency plans, but not for something this severe. You'd think "levee breaks, city floods" would be one of their scenarios.

Anyway... inadequate funds and inadequate planning.

This is a horrible week: I think my anger is probably as simultaneously focused and scattershot as all those hungry, sleepless, crying, shouting folks we keep seeing on the news. New Orleans was a city with a poverty rate of between 28 and 34 percent (the infamous undercount probably placed it closer to the latter figure), and I'm guessing the nearly all of those left stranded there were among those below the poverty line. Yet Mayor Nagin has decided to redirect the police force from search-and-rescue to protecting property, which says only one thing: the lives of the poor are less valuable than the property of the rich.

I hope all our donations to Katrina relief can help save lives, and maybe even make better lives for a lot of these people who had been mired in poverty prior to the deluge. I also hope that this disaster raises a lot of questions about the nature of American society, and the allocation of our government resources. Maybe, on a more practical level, we could also learn a lot about efficient disaster relief and recovery, e.g., how to evacuate a city when a third of its residents are dirt poor with no means for mobility?

Oh no, your absolutely right. Everyone knew. Im talking, weeks before... thats why some (poor or not) decided to stay. Right?

Oh wait... thats not right at all. Fact is, we didnt know the extent of the destruction (and still dont) until after the storm(s).

I dont care what i did, or didnt have. If I feared my life was in danger, my lazy butt would be jogging north. In times of crisis, alot of places are open.. so i would seek refuge in say.. church organizations, homeless shelters, etc.

The people got the shaft. agreed. But, they got what was coming to them. Its seems now, that the state/federal agenencies could have done more to fund there evacuation, but still..

Survival of the fittest bitches.
