Help New Orleans

Please help hurricane victims in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

Donate to the Red Cross.

Update: Ugh. This is horrible. Worse than I thought. It won't be as bad as the tsunami, but it's bad enough. Watching New Orleans destroyed in slow motion is heart-breaking. I hope the Army Corps of Engineers can stop the flooding soon, and maybe save the city. It doesn't look good at this hour, though.

Our stepmom happened to be staying with us when it hit, and she lives in Bay St. Louis - direct hit. She has no idea if her house and livelihood are standing. She also hasn't heard from her husband, who was in a brick bunker in Waveland. We've had CNN on for the last two days; it's just devastating and depressing.

Truly sad. There was a small segment that CNN played tonight where a reporter was asking a man questions about his missing wife. By the end of the tiny interview, the man was crying, the reporter was crying and so was the audience, no doubt... I looked over at Dawn and her eyes were welling up.

Yeah, I saw a BBC video of a man talking about his wife. She was ripped out of his hands by the floodwaters. He tried to hold on but couldn't. The last thing she told him was that she loved him and to take care of the kids. Now he can't find her body.

Jesus.

Horrible, horrible event. The misery is just beginning to be understood.

There will be many more stories soon enough.

The scale is certainly smaller than the tsunami and there was enough warning that many people escaped unharmed. But the tsunami waters receeded in short order. I'm not sure that New Orleans will ever be above water again.

Heart-breaking is a good word for it.

Well, at least we agree on something.
