Kelly tacks left

St. Paul Mayor Kelly is tacking left, attempting to position himself for re-election after his endorsement of President Bush. Paul Demko was there: "Perhaps the most telling line of Kelly's speech was when he declared 'I am a Democrat.' Nobody in the crowd applauded. That's because the people there
to support Kelly weren't Democrats."

He's going to have a very tough go.

This race is one that's going to be tight. Kelly's well known, and although his actions are clumsy, his instincts are good. If the St. Paul DFL can unite behind someone (and I think they'll hold their collective nose and do so with Chris Coleman), they'll probably pull it off.

Both candidates have hot tempers, and the race is not going to have the niceness we saw with Benanav and Kelly. Because Chris was on the City Council up until a year ago and supported the Mayor in many of his initiatives, the focus will be on those "style" issues. It will be a fun one to watch.

I'm loading up on popcorn.

St. Paul needs to elect a mayor who is not tax-adverse. This continual no-tax bullshit is really wearing on the city.
