Veterans Day

Today, we honor the living. We've all got friends and kin who've served bravely in war and peace, but today I'm thinking especially of my old pal Shawn, who hit the silk over Panama in '89, and then ran like hell across the Iraqi desert in '91. We're worlds apart on politics, but he's still with us, and a Red Sox fan to boot. I ain't seen him since -- what? 1993? -- but hell if this annual commemoration doesn't make me full of gladness that he's still alive and ready for a spirited debate at all hours. He's one of many, but not all have been as lucky or successful. And so, for Veterans Day, here are some links:

Here's to the men and women representing this country in Iraq, Afganistan and elsewhere.

Here's to holding their civilian leader's feet to the fire for when they make crappy decisions.

Another way to honor veterans and military service men and women is to celebrate all that they have done for our country. Keegan's Irish Pub and Restaurant in Northeast Minneapolis will be hosting their 5th Annual Salute to the Military weekend beginning today, November 10th - Sunday, November 12th. The pub will honor these men and women by providing them with one free drink, live music, service flags lining the walls to make them feel at home, and the pub’s famous S.O.S. food special for $3.95 headlining the menu all weekend long. During the “Salute to the Military” weekend, Keegan’s will accept donations for Soldiers’ Angels, and organization that sends packages to service men and women stationed overseas.

Keegan's is located at 16 University Ave NE in Minneapolis. More information is available at their website www.keeganspub.com
